Avoiding An Influenza Virus Infection

Many people are afraid to get an influenza virus infection each year. Those who should be concerned are parents with young infants, pregnant women, those over 65 years of age and those who will be more susceptible to complications from having contracted an influenza virus infection. It is important that those most at risk avoid contracting the flu at all costs because these are the groups with the highest flu related deaths each flu season.

Learning To Help Prevent Infection

Most people know the most common ways you can prevent yourself from getting an influenza virus infection. They know that the first line defense is to get your annual flu shot. And not just for one person, but every person that you live with. This way, all of you will be protected from brining home the influenza virus infection to someone else living in your house. Since the influenza virus life cycle is longer than some other viruses, you will want to keep minimal contact with a person suffering from an influenza virus infection, especially if they have already had their flu shot. In that case, it is probably a strain of an influenza virus infection that was not covered by the flu shot that year and you will be able to contract it.

Other precautions that you will want to take, especially out in public, is to always remember to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. This will help in general from the spreading of germs to yourself or to others. Make sure that if you are around people who are sick or say that they don’t feel well. You will want to wash you hands often and avoid sharing cups, plates and utensils with people who are sick or think that they are getting sick.

Another way that you can prevent from spreading an influenza virus infection is if you are coming down with the flu, you will need to avoid all of the groups that are most at risk for complications from contracting an influenza virus infection. You will want to especially those who are over 65 years of age. This is the group most at risk for complications and possible death due to the contraction of an influenza virus infection.

The most important thing to remember is to get your flu shot every year in order to help prevent the spread of the flu keep those at risk safe from contracting it.
